Stainless steel is becoming a better choice for industry and construction due to its lower environmental impact and long-life cycle compared to galvanized carbon steel.

Anzor Fasteners are now NZ agents for a new range of LEAN duplex 2202 Class 80 stainless steel fasteners, which are a corrosion-resistant and high tensile strength alternative to 8.8 carbon steel fasteners, at a price slightly lower than 304 grade stainless.

What is 2202 Stainless Steel?

2202 is a lean duplex stainless steel (UNS S32001, EN 1.4482) with lower nickel and higher chromium and nitrogen content, ensuring excellent corrosion resistance and cost savings. It combines ferritic and austenitic structures, offering exceptional mechanical properties and environmental protection. View our full test report here.

Why Choose 2202 Over 304, 316 or Carbon Steel Fasteners?

  • Superior Corrosion Resistance: 2202 shows remarkable resistance to rust in neutral salt spray tests, performing similar or better than that of 304 and performs exceptionally well in acidic environments (significantly better than 304).
  • Higher Mechanical Strength: 2202 Class 80 fasteners have superior strength and fatigue resistance properties with a Tensile Strength of 800 MPa and Yield Strength of 600 MPa.  Compared to 304 stainless steel, 2202 Class 80 is significantly stronger and especially so at elevated temperatures where at 300°C it has twice the yield strength of 304 .
  • Excellent Fatigue Resistance: 2202 offers fatigue resistance more than three times greater than 304 stainless steel.
  • Cost Efficiency: Higher strength means less material is required, reducing overall costs and weight.  Also with lower levels of Nickel and Molybdenum it is around 5% less than the cost of 304 and significantly less than 316, but still with excellent corrosion resistance.
  • Sustainability: Producing 1 ton of 2202 stainless steel emits only 2.21 CO₂ equivalents, compared to 4.64 CO₂ for carbon steel products that also require additional surface treatments.  So together with having a longer life-cycle and the fact that stainless steel is 100% recyclable (and mostly made from recycled content), it is by far the most sustainable choice.

2202 is ideal for infrastructure projects, machinery, and chemical processing applications due to its high strength, corrosion resistance, and sustainability.  It offers:

  • Corrosion Resistance: Far surpasses 304 and performs well compared to 316, particularly in acidic and chloride-rich conditions.
  • Strength and Durability: Higher tensile strength than traditional austenitic stainless steels.
  • Environmental Impact: Significantly reduced CO₂ emissions compared to carbon steel.

2202 Lean Duplex is a newer addition to the stainless steel family, but well proven and now available (to order from offshore) in a range of fasteners, and ideal for New Zealand infrastructure and construction projects.
